It seems like only yesterday, I was in high school trying to figure out what to do with my life. I had both of my parents as well as society screaming at me to "Go to college". My parents said thing like "You can't do much in life without a college education" and "Go to college and the world is your oyster". Blah, Blah, Blah!!
I went to College, Studied hard and got pretty good grades. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. I am recently married and my wife and I relocated to Baltimore from our home state of Michigan. When I decided to start looking for a job within my degree, I figured I was close to Washington, D.C. and could easily find something, after all, according to my parents the world was my oyster!
Unfortunatly, after months of interviews and searching, I started to take notice of that annoying attachment on Entry level job postings that says "1 to 2 years experience required!"
Correct me if i'm wrong!! But doesn't "Entry Level" mean that it's a job, meant to give a person that experience, and you should not have to have that experience before you start that job?
I could not afford to take an Internship while in college because they payed little or no money and school books are expensive! So for the life of me, I can not wrap my head around the idea that I need 2 years of work experience to get a job that is Entry Level (these jobs are suppost to be an alternative to Internships!)
When I was younger, I used to think that those people who I saw in their late 20's and 30's waiting tables and tending bar failed in life, and didn't go to school. Now that I'm older, I realize that most of these people have college degrees and are in the same boat as I am!!
I am now working as Staff Assistant/Receptionist, I got the position through a temp. agency. It pays $12 an hour! (not a lot for a newly married college educated man). But its at a government lobbying office for a large company, so if I word it properly on my resume, than that becomes my entry level job!
